♀️ Attendees at a Women’s Health Forum convened by Tri NZ on the sidelines of February’s Napier Triathlon Festival won’t be the only ones to benefit from the expert insights.

Tri NZ has just released a ‘Female Health’ coaching module to its list of accredited coaches after extracting key inputs from the session with keynote speaker Dr Julia Casadio (PhD).

A HPSNZ sports physiologist for multiple medal-winning Olympians, Casadio has devoted her career to assisting girls thrive in sport through puberty and beyond. With additional expertise from pelvic floor physiotherapist Emily Burmester, and Tri NZ Women and Girls lead Tamara Knapman (nee Reed), the four module course is now available to the wider Tri NZ Community.

The Female Health module is a course specifically designed for anyone keen to learn the unique requirements of female athletes, including coaches, athletes and parents. It gives a progressive understanding of female health and its integration with exercise, and has already hit the mark.

“As a male coach, if we’re wanting to work with female athletes, we need to know this stuff,” said Triathlon Tauranga Junior Development Programme Coordinator Blake Miller.

“If we have an athlete come to us with questions and we don’t have answers, then we’re probably working in the wrong space”

Said another Tri NZ accredited male coach: “These additional modules definitely provide a coach with a better understanding of the female athlete from a health and wellbeing perspective.

“It’s interesting how females and males differ from the style of coaching. It has definitely made me think about what they may actually want versus what I perceive.”

The launch of the Female Health course is the first step in the realisation of Tri NZ’s rejuvenated Community Coaching strategy. It is designed to increase value to coaches through modular online learning opportunities. Next up will be the delivery of a Youth Coaching module with a specific youth coaching course to be delivered in person later this year.

Tri NZ GM of Community

“A key part of our four-year Community strategy is to provide more value for Tri NZ accredited coaches,” said Anna Russell, Tri NZ’s GM of Community.

“Funding received from Sport NZ has enabled us to develop an online learning management system (SportTutor) that gives us dynamic ability to develop and deliver online modules and women’s health is a crucial part of the coaching equation.

“For too long, the female voice has been absent from coaching discussions and now we can support both athletes to be heard and coaches to up skill in this area.”
