💫 The rise and rise of Caleb Wagener continues apace with the Auckland teen securing a seriously impressive top-20 in just his second World Triathlon Cup start.

Wagener was 19th on Saturday to headline the Kiwi quartet in Hong Kong with Joel Lange crashing out early on the bike after Ainsley Thorpe and Phoebe Carter finished 24th and 28th respectively in the earlier women’s race.

Lange suffered abrasions to his right hand and left forearm and hip but is expected to be declared fit to race Sunday’s Mixed Relay alongside Wagener, Thorpe and Carter. It will be the first time New Zealand competes in a relay at World Cup level after World Triathlon introduced the team format to its second tier this season.

Wagener has had a barnstorming second half of 2026, winning European Junior Cup Derry and finishing 4th at the World Junior (U19) Championships in Pontevedra later in September before stepping up to claim 35th in his World Cup debut in Tongyeong, South Korea a fortnight ago.

On Saturday, the 18-year-old featured prominently at the front of the bike leg and then recorded a 15:34 5km run split to ease into the top 20, finishing ahead of seasoned World Triathlon circuit campaigners such as Chase McQueen (USA/23rd), Max Stapley (GBR/24) and Henri Schoeman (RSA/27th).

“I’m happy with my race, a good improvement on last time and yeah, looking forward to the race [mixed relay] tomorrow,” Wagener told SBR-Tri.com.

“Yeah, it should be good. Love the team stuff and love representing the country.”

The feeling from his fellow Kiwis is increasingly mutual as Wagener continues to learn his craft at the senior level and back it up with results.

Expect his world ranking of #202 to improve when World Triathlon does its weekly re-ranking early next week.

Lange was in the huge pack that exited T1 to begin the sprint distance event’s bike leg but came a cropper when he lent down to tighten his shoes and hit a pot hole. Fortunately both Lange and his bike came through relatively unscathed with the Syndey-based Kiwi giving a thumbs up after emerging from the medical centre.

Just like the women’s race, where Russia’s Diana Isakova pipped Luxemburg’s Jeanne Lehair, the men’s race also featured a photo finish with Frenchman Nils Serre Gehrim just outkicking Aussie and former World Cup Napier winner Callum McClusky.

Wagener finished just 58 seconds behind Serre Gehrim who completed the race in 50:14.

Isakova won the women’s title in 55:39 with Thorpe and Carter finishing 1:31 and 1:50 down.

Thorpe and Carter produced 18:09 and 18:30 5km splits compared to Isakova’s winning 16:46 and Anqi Huang’s best of the day 16:38, a run that landed the Chinese athlete the bronze medal.

For comparison, Wagener’s 15:34 was the 22nd best run of the men’s race. McClusky produced the best run split – 14:35, 2 seconds quicker than Serre Gehri.
