Tayler Reid fared best on a tough day for the Kiwis at the World Triathlon Sprint Championships in Hamburg early Sunday NZ time.
The Gisborne 28-year-old was 25th as world No.2 Aussie Matt Hauser defended his title to extend his lead in the World Triathlon Championship Series (WTCS). Saxon Morgan, feeling the affects of post race illness, was 34th with James Corbett succumbing to the same head cold and withdrawing on the bike leg.
Gold Coast-based Tri Hawke’s Bay product Eva Goodisson, in 37th, led the trio of Kiwis in a women’s race made treacherous by even more rain than the men experienced.
French upstart Leonie Periault, who kicked on the bell and roared home with a blistering 15:28 5km split, upstaged countrywoman and reigning Olympic and WTCS champion Cassandre Beaugrand for gold with Brit Beth Potter rounding out the podium.
In her first race post a maiden block of altitude training in the Andorran Pyrenees, Brea Roderick followed Goodisson home in 43rd while double Olympian Ainsley Thorpe Triathlete missed the main bike pack out of the swim and faded to an uncharacteristic 51st.
Reid’s time was 1:46 down on Hauser while Goodisson trailed Periault by nearly 90 seconds, illustrating the step up in class all the Kiwis experienced in Hamburg.
We go again in Sunday’s World Triathlon Mixed Relay Championship (coverage from 11.30pm Sunday NZ Time at Triathlonlive.tv).
